Loaves and Fishes
Love is a basket with five loaves and two fishes…it’s never enough until you start to give it away.
That’s the mantra for Loaves and Fishes, an exceptional faith coalition designed to bring hope to those in the community in need of housing. Loaves and Fishes is a dedicated group made up of 11 congregations in the Denver Metro area and have supported Habitat’s mission since 1998. In 19 years, Loaves and Fishes has made a tremendous impact in the Denver area, creating 18 new homes.
Building Lisa and Francisco's Home
Loaves and Fishes were proud to partner with Lisa and Francisco’s family to construct their Habitat home. This is their story.
Before their Habitat home, Lisa and Francisco worried every time their children stepped outside their door, where bullets were lodged in their front porch from the most recent shooting. “Our neighbors were always fighting, drinking and smoking weed,” shared Lisa. “Our kids’ bikes were stolen the first day we lived here. They deserved to live in a place where they could be safe, have the freedom to play outside and just be kids.” Lisa and Francisco wanted nothing more than to be able to raise their children in a safe environment, but with Denver’s high housing costs, their options were limited.
A world of new opportunities opened up for Lisa & Francisco’s children when they finally moved into their new Habitat home. “Sheridan Square is in such a nicer neighborhood than where we were living,” shared Lisa. “This was huge for us… huge for our life and our dreams.”
Moving from a 3-bedroom apartment to a 5-bedroom homed make a big difference for Lisa and Francisco’s family of eight. “Katrina lived in apartments her entire life,” Lisa shared about their oldest daughter. “But in our Habitat home she has her own bedroom for the first time in her life.”
“Our Habitat home brought a lot of peace to our household. Having more personal space and privacy made a big difference.”
“Francisco and I work hard towards better things for our family – we want to lead by example and teach our kids about credit scores and the importance of building their credit,” shared Lisa. As parents, they wanted to provide their children with a safe and stable home so that their children can grow into their full potential. “Whatever our kids dreams are, I want them to go for it 100%. We want our kids to be independent and self-sufficient.”
