For many longtime homeowners in Denver, maintaining the homes they own – and doing so affordably – can be an enormous challenge. When homes age, but repair costs are high, someone who has been rooted in their community may face displacement. That’s where Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver’s Home Repair program finds its purpose and impact.
The impact of this program comes to life through stories like Carmen’s. For more than 35 years, Carmen’s home has been a cornerstone for her family. But as the years passed, critical repairs became harder to manage on a fixed income. After Carmen partnered with Habitat’s Home Repair program, staff and volunteers replaced the windows, doors, siding, gutters, and fencing on Carmen’s home. The improvements lowered her energy bills and brought her renewed comfort and security.
“My home needed repairs – I had high energy bills, and my doors were not secure,” Carmen shared. “Habitat came like angels in my life.”
Patricia, another longtime Denver homeowner, celebrated her 80th birthday with the gift of a safer, warmer home. After 51 years in the same house, she partnered with Habitat to replace her roof, gutters, storm windows, and fence. These repairs made her home more energy-efficient and provided peace of mind, especially the sturdy new fence that keeps her granddaughter safe. “I just feel blessed,” Patricia said of the experience.
Stories like these demonstrate the powerful impact of preserving homeownership through repairs. When families receive support for costly, critical updates, they can continue living safely and comfortably in the homes they love.
Habitat Metro Denver has been partnering with low-income homeowners on affordable home repairs since 2012. For residents with limited incomes—including retired and disabled individuals—these modifications are life-changing, improving weatherization, safety, and overall comfort. After repairs, homeowners often experience lower energy bills, renewed pride in their homes, and stronger connections to their communities.
This work is made possible through the generosity of community partners who contribute both funding and volunteer support. Their involvement helps ensure that longtime homeowners can remain in the neighborhoods they’ve helped shape, with homes that are safe, secure, and energy-efficient.
Volunteer build days – where teams come together to paint, install siding, and repair fencing – are a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when people unite around a shared purpose.
We’re grateful to all who make this work possible—including donors, corporate sponsors, and individual volunteers. The Credit Unions Building Community Initiative is one ongoing program that brings together credit unions to preserve affordable homes by helping families with essential exterior repairs. Thanks to the leadership of the presenting sponsor, Bellco Credit Union, and all of the initiative members, the program is providing pivotal support to the home repair program, and making a lasting impact in the lives of homeowners.
We are grateful for our network of supporters who help Habitat Metro Denver continue to uplift families, preserve affordable housing, and strengthen neighborhoods across the city.
