Faith Congregations and Land Partnerships

Faith organizations partner with Habitat by allocating land to build affordable housing

Land is one of the most important resources we have to increase affordable homeownership opportunities in our city. Habitat Metro Denver is grateful for the support of several congregations across the Denver Metro area who have partnered with us to provide land for new affordable homes.

In addition to land, these congregations also give financial support and volunteers to Habitat’s work, and serve as powerful advocates for housing in our communities.

Mountain View United Church, Aurora

Mountain View United Church formed a collaborative partnership with Habitat Metro Denver in 2022 and worked with the Interfaith Alliance of Colorado and the Congregation Land Campaign. Habitat worked alongside the congregation to develop a site plan that transformed an empty lot into 20 owner-occupied, affordable homes.

Augustana Lutheran Church, Denver

Augustana Lutheran Church began its partnership with Habitat Metro Denver in 2022. Thanks to the support of the Congregation Land Campaign, Augustana put out a request for proposals (RFP), inviting applications for an affordable housing developer to build homes on church-owned land. Habitat Metro Denver was selected as the developer and built 8 affordable homes on the site.

What is The Congregation Land Campaign?

Diverse congregations of faith across Colorado own thousands of acres of underutilized land.

In Denver, Jefferson, Arapahoe and Douglas counties alone, congregations own more than 5,000 acres of undeveloped or vacant land.

In many cases, congregations are mowing or maintaining these lots at significant cost, with limited benefit to themselves or the community. One way that congregations can use their land to support community health is by selling or leasing it to build affordable homes.

Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver is poised to respond to these projects and help congregations turn their unused land into attainable homes for hardworking families.

Donating, selling, or leasing land to Habitat is one of the most impactful ways your congregation can support affordable housing in your community.
