Celebrating 20 Years of Dedication: Gary Forbes, a Habitat for Humanity Hero

At the heart of every organization lies unsung heroes whose dedication and selflessness shape its very essence. For Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver, one of those heroes is Core Construction Volunteer Gary Forbes—a man whose journey from the aerospace industry to the world of service has left an indelible mark on countless lives.

Before his days with Habitat, Gary spent years in the aerospace industry, working in piece part manufacturing in Denver and overseas. But retirement didn’t signal a time to rest for Gary; it merely marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life.

In 2003, Gary’s path intersected with Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver, and from that moment on, he became an integral part of the organization. Driven by a desire to use his skills for good and make a tangible difference in his community, Gary dove headfirst into volunteering with Habitat. He worked up to three days a week on construction sites across the Metro Denver area. From his very first project—Pierce St Townhomes in Lakewood—to his most recent endeavors at Villa Park, Miller Homes, and Aria Homes, Gary has been a steadfast presence on Habitat construction sites, lending his expertise and enthusiasm to every task at hand.

What kept Gary coming back, project after project, year after year? It wasn’t just the work; it was the people, the sense of community, and above all, the mission of Habitat. Gary found fulfillment not only in the tangible results of his labor but also in the connections forged with fellow Core volunteers and the homeowners whose lives were transformed by Habitat’s work.

Among Gary’s many experiences, one stands out vividly—the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project in 2013. Working alongside President Carter and Rosalynn in Globeville, Gary witnessed firsthand the humility and dedication displayed by the former president, who rolled up his sleeves and worked tirelessly alongside Habitat volunteers. It was a moment that encapsulated the essence of Habitat’s mission and left an indelible mark on Gary’s heart. Gary also participated in Global Village Builds in Zambia and Macedonia.

Gary’s impact extends far beyond his physical presence on Habitat construction sites. He’s also been a generous financial supporter of Habitat. His late wife, Pat, volunteered in the Habitat office with the Volunteer Engagement Team for six years—a testament to the Forbes family’s dedication to Habitat’s mission.

As Gary celebrates an incredible 20 years of service with Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver as our longest serving Core Construction Volunteer, we extend our deepest gratitude and heartfelt
