“I found Habitat and I just love it.”

As a “Regular” with Habitat, Kevin Klem devotes the majority of his week to volunteering in several capacities. Kevin works with our home repair and renovations teams, assists our ReStore truck drivers, and builds at our production shop.

Kevin sought out volunteering with Habitat after retirement and keeps coming back. “I wanted to give back to the community,” explains Kevin. “I really enjoy the people, the people really make the difference.”

Because Kevin experiences so many sides of Habitat’s work, he has unique insight into what Habitat’s culture and mission are like.

“I found Habitat and I just love it. I learn things daily from other regulars and supervisors.”

Home Repair and Renovation

“On home repair, I learn carpentry skills that I didn’t know before. With home repair, you deal with things like uneven roofs and unique problems to solve on each house.

“With renovation we do repairs to existing buildings – like drywall – and each task has its own set of skills”

ReStore Trucks

“I go out with the trucks and we go to all parts of Denver and Aurora, and you see parts of the city that you’ve never seen before. We pick things up that are critical to the ReStore in terms of sales.”

Production Shop

“At the production shop, we start from the beginning, learning how to square frames and build walls.”

Volunteer at our Production Shop

“The people are so incredible. I see a lot of millennials, I see a lot of young folks, I see a lot of older folks too. And when you work with Habitat partner families, it’s a really positive experience.”

Kevin’s advice to volunteers interested in regularly working with Habitat reflects his commitment to Habitat: “Try a couple things and see what you like. I think that’s real important. You can learn the entire Habitat operations.”
