Solar Decathlon House Moves to College View

One of the award-winning houses from last year’s Solar Decathlon has been donated to Habitat Metro Denver! We moved this unique, custom-built house to our College View community in early November.
The 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom house was designed and built by students at the University of California, Berkeley and University of Denver. The team incorporated progressive design elements and energy-efficient components so that it could be close to net-zero energy while also remaining affordable.
The contemporary home is designed with some very unique features, including:
- A light wall that allows for optical fibers to transport natural lighting from outside of the house through a sealed cavity and into the bathroom
- Accoya wood porch railings that have a lifespan of 50 years
- Wool insulation
- Kitchen counters and tile made from recycled ceramic materials
The home has been residing where the Decathlon was hosted on Pena Boulevard, and this past weekend the daunting task of moving it 20 miles occurred. The house was separated into two sections, hoisted onto a flatbed truck with a crane, driven across town and placed on our lot.
As you can imagine, our work is not quite done. Volunteers will be helping to put some final touches on the home over the next few weeks and get it move-in ready for the future homeowners.
