Nepal Earthquake

Our hearts go out to the people of Nepal and neighboring countries after Saturday’s magnitude-7.8 earthquake and the aftershocks that followed on Sunday. An untold number of people are homeless after the natural disaster.

Habitat for Humanity has worked in Nepal for 18 years, and we are well-prepared to respond to this devastating disaster. Habitat’s disaster response teams are coordinating response operations with local government agencies and disaster relief partners.  Their current plans include:

• Distributing 20,000 emergency shelter kits including tarpaulins and other materials for immediate shelter from the elements.
• Marshalling engineers and engineering students to help carry out house-by-house damage assessments, as many families fear staying in their homes.
• Constructing transitional (temporary) shelters or moving immediately into new home (core) construction (depending on the assessment).

They are our longest continuous tithe partner, and we are proud to have invested more than $200,000 to help build homes throughout the country.
