Meet Regina, a CAPABLE Partner

“I love my home and now I feel safe to stay here for a long time.”

The Colorado Visiting Nurse Association (CVNA) partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver to launch a unique program called CAPABLE (Community Aging in Place – Advancing Better Living for Elders). Today, we’re excited to announce that we’ve officially served over 100 seniors across metro Denver through this collaborative program that provides medical consultations and home modifications.

Regina is a vibrant 73 years old and has lived in her home in Aurora for 35 years. She is originally from Germany, where she fell in love with her late-husband, a soldier stationed in her hometown. After his deployment, she moved to Colorado with him.

Regina cares deeply about her health, mobility and being able to stay in her home. “I am independent but it’s the little things that have become more difficult.” Regina continues, “One of the hardest daily tasks for me to accomplish used to be taking a shower; I was scared to fall or not be able to get out.”

After reaching out to the CVNA, Regina was able to apply for the CAPABLE program. CAPABLE demonstrates that modest investments in home modifications can help seniors remain in their homes longer, improve health outcomes, and decrease medical costs. The program includes 10, 60- to 90-minute home visits with an occupational therapist, a registered nurse, and Habitat Metro Denver staff, all of whom evaluate the needs of the individual and identify how to improve their life.

The home repairs and improvements completed by Habitat Metro Denver include: a stair-lift to safely get her to her bedroom; interior and exterior grab bars; retiled floor; a shower chair with non-slip padding; and a front porch ramp.

“I am so happy, I feel safe and can now get out of the house more! I would recommend the CAPABLE program to any senior that wants to stay in their home,” Regina shares.

Thank you to Wells Fargo, which has invested $150,000 to CAPABLE, and all additional supporters, volunteers, donors and sponsors that make these life-changing aging-in-place programs possible for seniors like Regina.
