Future Homeowners Melissa and Marcus

Affordable homeownership with Habitat is helping this family realize their dream.

Melissa, who grew up in the Denver area, had seen Habitat’s educational video at Colorado Mills and had shopped at the ReStores. When she and Marcus grew frustrated with trying to find a house they could afford, Melissa looked online and saw that Habitat was taking applications for the Miller Homes development in Wheat Ridge.

Marcus got the paperwork together, they applied the same week and were accepted.  Their mortgage through Habitat will be about 30% of their gross income – far less than a conventional mortgage. The blue and white, two-story duplex is close to their rental home, so their sons won’t have to change schools.

“Our new home is in a little safer neighborhood and there’s a park right behind us,’’ shares Melissa, who plans to use the fourth bedroom as an office and a spare bedroom. “The boys have visited the new house and they got to pick out their bedrooms.”

“Without Habitat, it would have been impossible for us to buy a house,”  said Marcus

Melissa and Marcus are finishing up their sweat equity hours by helping to build their new house. Melissa has installed windows, dug water barriers around the foundation, and helped with the kitchen cabinet and shelving. Marcus helped put up drywall, build stairs and caulked outdoors. And their two sons have seen them put in hard work on their future home.

“They see you have to work hard to have a home and that their parents are willing to work hard to make things right for them,” said Marcus. “I have learned so much. And all the skills I have learned will help me take good care of our home.”
