Homeowner David

Throughout David’s career in non-profits, his mission has been to help the less fortunate. When he wanted to buy his own home, he knew Habitat was among the organizations helping people build new chapters and solid foundations.

“I’ve heard about Habitat my entire career,” shares David. “For the general public, there’s nothing like Habitat out there for buying a home affordably. I am so grateful to Habitat.”

David moved to Denver 10 years ago after graduating college. He taught sixth grade math, mentored disadvantaged students, and helped connect families to resources in the community. He then joined the staff at Thistle Community Housing, which helps manufactured home communities buy the land under their homes.

When noise and secondhand smoke became common at his apartment near City Park, and his landlord was unresponsive, David started looking for a new home. He applied to Habitat but didn’t have enough income. After he got a raise, he reapplied and was accepted to buy a two-bedroom home through Habitat’s homeownership program. He has been working two jobs to save money and prepare to move in.

David is excited about having a yard where he can grow flowers and vegetables. He is also excited to have a dishwasher for the first time. His father is a house painter, and they plan to paint David’s new home together after he moves in. “I will look forward so much more to cooking because I can put the dishes in the washer,” shares David. “I look forward to bonding with my dad while we paint.”

David is also looking forward to seeing how he and his neighbors will create their own community culture. “We already have something in common – buying Habitat for Humanity homes.”

“Thank you so much to Habitat. Homeownership wouldn’t be possible for me without you.”

For his required sweat equity, David installed trusses and siding, and built out walls for a storage unit. He’d never used power tools before and was impressed with how patient and helpful the staff and core volunteers were.

“After I finished my sweat equity hours, I want to give back and continue the Habitat mission,” shares David. “I felt powerless to landlords who have total control. I’ll have a sense of empowerment when I have my own home. Thank you so much to Habitat. Homeownership wouldn’t be possible for me without you.”
