Meet HYP Leader Mikaela

“Volunteering means giving back to the community while also developing personally and professionally,” shares Mikaela, a Habitat Young Professionals leader (HYP). Mikaela moved from Arizona to attend college at the University of Denver and has called Denver her home ever since.

Mikaela started volunteering with HYP of Metro Denver in January of 2014 and immediately became an integral part of the leadership team. HYP is a group of motivated young professionals committed to making a difference in the community through Habitat’s mission.

“I got involved with HYP when I was looking to connect with other young professionals,” says Mikaela. “I’ve been an active volunteer the past five years because I truly feel like – and know – I’m making an impact. I love hearing from the partner families how having a Habitat home has forever changed their lives for generations to come.”

As a HYP leader, Mikaela has helped build many homes, raised funds for Habitat’s homeownership program, and launched the professional speaker series. In addition to her work locally, Mikaela serves as Chair of the HYP Advisory Council at the national level.

“Join us!” Mikaela exclaims, “We’re always looking for other active young professionals who are passionate about Habitat’s mission. If you’re nervous about being a volunteer on the build site, we have tons of other opportunities to get involved and meet new people! HYP is unique from other young professional groups in that you’re able to feel good about giving back but still have the networking and social aspects.”
