ADU Program Provides Housing Affordability, Flexibility, and Stability
Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver helps homeowners build accessory dwelling units (ADUs) that create affordable housing supply and support housing stability
What is an ADU?
Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver is the construction partner for the Denver Housing Authority’s ADU Program , helping homeowners design, finance, and build accessory dwelling units on their property.
ADUs are small, independent homes located on the same lot as an existing residence. They provide affordable housing options for renters while helping homeowners generate income, support family members, and remain in their neighborhoods.
Originally launched in west Denver, the program now supports homeowners throughout Denver as citywide ADU regulations have expanded.
How the program works
Interested homeowners apply
- Eligible homeowners work with program partners to determine whether their property can accommodate an ADU.
Planning and financing
- Program partners help homeowners evaluate design options, costs, financing opportunities, and affordability requirements.
Site review
- Habitat and partners review utilities and site conditions to ensure the property can support an ADU.
Construction
- Habitat builds the ADU using pre-approved designs that help reduce design, permitting, and construction costs.
Affordable home created
- Homeowners gain additional housing space that can be used to house family or create an affordable rental opportunity
