Construction FAQ

On your volunteer day, we will greet you for sign-in several minutes before the scheduled start time for the day. Then a staff member will provide a short overview of Habitat and a safety orientation. Please note that safety is very important to us and your presence at the safety orientation is mandatory.

After orientation, supervisors will break the group into smaller teams, if necessary, and they will teach everyone the tasks for the day. If there is ever anything you are asked to do that you are uncomfortable with, the supervisor will be happy to help you get comfortable with the task or find another task for you.

Nope! All of our projects are built primarily with inexperienced volunteers who have a willingness to learn. Our construction supervisors will teach you what you need to know.

Yes. For new construction, home repair and renovation projects, all volunteers must be at least 16 years old. 16- and 17-year-old volunteers are not allowed to be on high ladders or use power tools, and must have a parental waiver and medical release signed. Please note: Even if accompanied by a parent, children under 16 are not permitted on our construction sites.

For the production shop, volunteers must be at least 14 years old to participate at the paint shop. Volunteers under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

All volunteers are asked to commit to the full scheduled day for any project you sign up for. All construction build days are about 8 hours with a 45 minute lunch. 

It is very important to arrive on time so you hear the safety orientation. If you arrive after the safety orientation, you will not be able to stay and volunteer.

  • Sturdy, closed-toe shoes (hiking shoes or boots, leather boots or a solid pair of athletic shoes) are required for volunteers.
  • Wear clothing that can get dirty, ruined and/or paint-covered.
  • During the warmer months you can wear shorts or long pants, whatever you are most comfortable in.
  • During the winter, be sure to wear warm socks, layers, a hat and a warm coat that can get dirty.
  • We have work gloves available on site, but please bring a pair if you have them.

We are following local guidelines when it comes to COVID-19 safety protocols. Any individual who is not vaccinated is required to wear a mask at our locations, at all times. Masks are optional for vaccinated individuals.

  • A sack lunch (many sites are not near fast food options)
  • A refillable water bottle
  • Sunscreen/sunglasses

Optional items include:

  • An OSHA-approved hard hat and safety glasses. All volunteers are required to wear a hard hat and safety glasses, but we provide them on site.
  • A tool belt and hand tools labeled with your name. Please do not bring your own power tools.

If it is raining or snowing, please check our weather updates page for delays or cancellations. The website will be updated by 7 a.m. on your build day.

We would love for you to bring a friend. Please note that all volunteers must sign up in advance to ensure proper supervision, enough tools and adequate work space. If you want to schedule a group volunteer day, please visit our Group Page.

As soon as you know that you will not be able to fulfill your commitment, please sign in to the VolunteerHub account that you created when you registered to cancel. The more advance notice we are given, the more likely it is that we’ll be able to recruit additional volunteers.

Yes! In addition to volunteering on our construction sites and in the production shop, volunteers may also volunteer in our ReStores, serve on committees, and volunteer for special projects. You can also help by making a monetary donation. Our largest source of income comes from local individual donations. If every volunteer donated $10, we could build one more home each year!

No, but we would love to have you complete your court-ordered community service at one of our ReStores.

Please sign up here. The first time you sign up, you will need to create an account. If you want to sign up again, just sign in and sign up for the day you’d like to volunteer. Once you sign up, you will receive a confirmation email with all the build day details.

ReStore FAQ

The Habitat Metro Denver ReStores sell donated home improvement and home furnishings to the public at a discount. One hundred percent of our profits support our mission to create strength, stability and self-reliance for local low-income families through affordable housing.

Volunteers in our ReStores unload donations, organize inventory, arrange furniture, help customers and load up sales. Volunteers on our trucks support our drivers as they pick-up donations in the metro area.

ReStore volunteers must be at least 14 years old. Volunteers under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers under 18 will need a waiver signed by a parent/guardian. 

 

Truck volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

ReStores have two volunteer shifts per day:

  • Tuesday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and 2 p.m. – 6 p.m.

ReStore trucks shifts are Tuesday – Saturday, 8:45 a.m. – 4:45 p.m.

Please arrive at the ReStore a few minutes before your shift begins. Be sure to arrive on time so you hear the orientation and safety training. If you arrive during or after the talk you will not be able to stay and volunteer. Volunteers commit to working the entire shift.

Volunteers may stay for both shifts, but will need to sign up for both in advance.

The ReStore is a warehouse environment and volunteers should dress appropriately. Volunteers must wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes (tennis shoes are fine but no crocs or flip-flops). Dress is casual with a t-shirt and jeans or t-shirt and shorts in the summer.

The ReStores can be dirty and dusty, so chances are you will leave here less pristine than when you came!

It is not uncommon to lift up to 50 pounds at a time or to help move couches, large windows, and appliances. There will be a safety orientation in the morning.

If you have any medical concerns (pregnancy, back problems, etc.) or cannot handle the physical demands, the ReStores may not be a good fit for you.

Volunteers working one shift can take a 30-minute break. Volunteers working two shifts in a row can take a 10-minute break in the morning, a 30-minute lunch and a 10-minute break in the evening.

We have a community kitchen for volunteers to use. For your 30-minute lunch break, you may bring your lunch or go out. Please tell a staff member when you are taking a break. Break or lunch cannot be taken at the beginning or end of the shift.

We welcome volunteers doing all kinds of community service hours. If your hours are court-ordered, you cannot volunteer if your ticket is related to theft, aggression or adult crimes involving minors. Learn more about our court-ordered community service program.

We count on your commitment to volunteer. However, if you are not able to make your shift, please cancel at least 24 hours before your shift begins so we can replace you. Volunteers who miss shifts are allowed three no-shows before they are ineligible to volunteer.
