Silvia’s Story

Before becoming a Habitat homeowner, Silvia never dreamed she would be able to go back to school. For years Silvia and her husband found themselves working long hours and spending too much of their hard-earned income on rent for an inadequate and unsafe apartment. Once their daughter Melissa was born they decided to make a change and partnered with Habitat for Humanity.

"I want to be an example for my children that you can reach your dreams at ANY age."

At the time they moved into their Habitat home, Silvia only had a middle school education. “I used to volunteer as a Sunday school teacher at my church and that experience made me realize that I wanted to go back to school and pursue a teaching career,” shares Silvia.

Today, Silvia has earned a GED, an associate degree in teaching, and currently has 80 credits towards her bachelor’s degree in early childhood development and education.

“My home is a blessing,” Silvia shares. “It has given my children safety and stability, my husband a place to start his business, and me the opportunity to pursue my education.” “Thank you Habitat Denver and everyone who supports the program.” Silvia continues, “Homeownership has changed my family’s life for the better and has laid the foundation for my children’s future.”
